Undefeated. In one word that is how you can describe Lyoto Machida and his MMA carreer thus far. With a record of 15-0, Machida has never lost a match in his professional mixed martial arts career. He has fought some of the well-known and most respected UFC fighters in the world: Tito Ortiz, BJ Penn, Rich Franklin, and most recently, Rashad Evans and Thiago Alves.
Known as "The Dragon," Machida is of Brazillian and Japanese descent and learned martial arts from this father, a Shotokan karate master, Yoshizo Machida. Lyoto has a long history of martial arts. He started learning and training in karate at the age of 3 and it he got his black belt in karate at the age of 13. When he was 12, he began training in sumo wrestling and at 15 he learned jiu jitsu. In collge he started learning muay thai in Thailand and he also went to Tokyo to traing wrestling with the New Japan Pro Wrestling dojo.
Machida made his MMA debut in Japan, fighting in New Japan Pro Wrestling. He then went on to K-1 kickboxing and defeated two of the top K-1 kickboxers. Shortly after he was invited to fight in UFC's The Ultimate Fighter 1 and has fought in the UFC since then. In the UFC fights, Machida has taken on and defeated some fighters such as: Sam Hoger, David Heath, Kazuhiro Nakamura, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.
Lyoto Machida's fighting style is talked about often because of it's unorthodox nature using his cautious and precise counter-striking abilities. He uses his diverse background to land counter punches effectively and often comes across as conservative. Some viewers see his fights as less than enterataining because of this style and the match usually ending in decision. What ever his style is, it seems to be working since he has yet to lose a match with any fighter so far.
