Miguel Torres

Miguel Torres

Not to be confused with the FIFA soccer player from Peru, Miguel Torres is an American MMA fighter out of East Chicago in Indiana. Coincidentally, he shares the same nickname "Angel." Ranked #1 as the best Bantamweight fighter in the world, Torres has a serious ground game with a lot of strength in stand-up fighting. Miguel fights in the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization and their bantamweight division is 1265 lbs.

He specializes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and received his black belt from a member in the Gracie family. Carlson Gracie, Jr. He's also potent in his Muay Thai game so don't underestimate his stand-up fighting. He can strike, grapple, wrestle and take you on. With a record of 37 wins and 1 loss, his own admission is that it is an understatement. He claims that it is actually 48 wins and 1 loss, which is even more of an intimidating record for such a young fighter at 28 years old. Torres is one of the most well-rounded fighters today.

He attributes his successes to his community and his familiy, which were 2 pillars to help mold him to the character he is today. He grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of gangs and drugs but was able to steer clear of that and instead, fight for the honor of his father's and grandfather's name.  He gives back to the community with his mixed martial arts academy that he opened up in Hammond, Indiana. Miguel's MMA school teaches nearly 200 students Brazilian jiu-jitsu and helps keep the children in his neighborhood away from negative influences like he did growing up.

Pound for pound, Torres is not only just the number 4 MMA fighter in the world, but he also is somewhat of a philantrapist, giving back to his community by instilling his family values to his students providing the esteem and encouragement he had growing up.

Tito Ortiz

Tito Ortiz

Tito Ortiz a.k.a "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" is known for mainly two things: 1. Banging the porn star Jenna Jameson and 2. For being a trash talker.

Tito met the famous porn star via MySpace and they have been in a monogomous relationship since at least November 2006. They have twin boys together after Jenna quit the porn business. The twins are Jesse Jameson Ortiz and Journey Jett Ortiz.

After each fight, Tito would put on a t-shirt that would say something degrading about the opponent he just fought. These are just some of them that shows off his overzealous confidence:

  • "Gay Mezger Is My Bitch" - after beating Guy Mezger in UFC 19
  • "I Killed The Axe Murderer!" - after defeating Wanderlei Silva in UFC 25
  • "I killed Kenny!", "You Bastard!" - after his win against Ken Shamrock in UFC 40
  • "Punishing Him Into Retirement" - again after winning against Ken Shamrock but in Ortiz vs. Shamrock 3
  • "If You Can Read This I Just Stomped His Ass!" - when he beat Evan Tanner in UFC 30

Tito Ortiz does have the skills to back up his trash talking. He has powerful strikes both on the ground or in his stand-up game. Ortiz was the Light Heavyweight Champion from 2001 to 2003 but eventually lost his title to Randy Couture. He has defeated some big name fighters like Evan Tanner, Elvis Sinosic, Vladimir Matyushenko, Patrick C

Dan Severn

Dan Severn

Who is "The Beast?" If you were an very early fan of UFC, you would know that The Beast is Dan Severn. He is one of the early adopters and fighters in the beginning years of the Ultimate Fighting Championship tournaments. With the most fights under his belt, he is the most experience MMA fighter since this relatively young sport has began. Severn's record is 86 wins, 16 losses, and 7 draws. Along with the UFC, Severn has also fought in other leagues such as PRIDE FC, King of the Cage, WEC, Cage Rage, and even the WWF (World Wrestling Federation). He is a mixed martial artist and professional wrestler.

Dan Severn started his athletic career in freestyle wrestling. He went to Arizona State where he earned All-American four times. He even coached at Arizona State and also at Michigan State. Because of his wrestling techniques, Severn became one of the most popular UFC fighters. He was able to take down fighters to the ground and beat them for a knockout win. Though on the ground, he lacked submission and grapping skills which is widely used today in Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu.

Severn was one of the early pioneers in mixed martial arts. When he fought in UFC 4 in 1994, mixed martial arts or MMA was unheard of at that time. It was because of people like Dan Severn and other fighters he fought like Royce Gracie, Tank Abbott, and Ken Shamrock who helped pave the way for this sport. Without these fighters, the UFC and MMA would not be where it is today. Severn even mentors some fighters today like Rashad Evans and Luke Zachrich.

Besides MMA, Severn also was an accomplished pro wrestler and wrestled in leagues such as the WWF and National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and Japan's UWF International. In pro wrestling, he competed against some wrestlers like Shinya Hashimoto, The Rock, and The Godfather.

Because of his popularity, history, and experience with the UFC, Dan Severn is named in the UFC Hall of Fame.

Lyoto Machida

Lyoto Machida

Undefeated. In one word that is how you can describe Lyoto Machida and his MMA carreer thus far. With a record of 15-0, Machida has never lost a match in his professional mixed martial arts career. He has fought some of the well-known and most respected UFC fighters in the world: Tito Ortiz, BJ Penn, Rich Franklin, and most recently, Rashad Evans and Thiago Alves.

Known as "The Dragon," Machida is of Brazillian and Japanese descent and learned martial arts from this father, a Shotokan karate master, Yoshizo Machida. Lyoto has a long history of martial arts. He started learning and training in karate at the age of 3 and it he got his black belt in karate at the age of 13. When he was 12, he began training in sumo wrestling and at 15 he learned jiu jitsu. In collge he started learning muay thai in Thailand and he also went to Tokyo to traing wrestling with the New Japan Pro Wrestling dojo.

Machida made his MMA debut in Japan, fighting in New Japan Pro Wrestling. He then went on to K-1 kickboxing and defeated two of the top K-1 kickboxers. Shortly after he was invited to fight in UFC's The Ultimate Fighter 1 and has fought in the UFC since then. In the UFC fights, Machida has taken on and defeated some fighters such as: Sam Hoger, David Heath, Kazuhiro Nakamura, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.

Lyoto Machida's fighting style is talked about often because of it's unorthodox nature using his cautious and precise counter-striking abilities. He uses his diverse background to land counter punches effectively and often comes across as conservative. Some viewers see his fights as less than enterataining because of this style and the match usually ending in decision. What ever his style is, it seems to be working since he has yet to lose a match with any fighter so far.

Quinton Jackson

Quinton Jackson

Known as Rampage Jackson for his style of fighting, Quinton is the number 2 light heavyweight in the world. He rose through the ranks through the now debunked Pride Fighting Championship from Japan. Quinton is known as Rampage because of the way he man-handles some of his opponents. One example is during a fight with Ricardo Arona in Pride Critical Countdown in 2004. Arona had Jackson in a triangle choke hold, but Jackson picked him up and slammed him on the mat for a KO to win the match. His sheer strength and skills is what makes him a solid fighter. Rampage also had an impressive knockout of Wanderlei Silva and a win by decision with Keith Jardine.

At 6' 1", 205 lbs, and 30 years old, Quinton is quite a character outside of the cage. In July 2008, Quinton led police on a chase while driving his lifted Ford F-350 with a painted picture of him on the side of the vehicle. He was driving recklessly on the wrong side of the road. Even with one of his tires blown, he still kept driving on his rims until the police finally stopped him. He was arressted for felony reckless driving and said it was because he was depressed after his loss to Forrest Griffin. That same month, someone in his family flagged down a police officer to talk to Quinton because he was acting unusual. He then was checked into a mental institution for a few days and was said to not sleep for 4 days and only drinking water and energy drinks.

After that short bout with insanity, it looks like Rampage got back on track. He defeated Wanderlei Silva and Keith Jardine and has shown interest to fight Rashad Evans who is from Jardine's same camp. But since Lyoto Machida won that fight against Rashad Evans, Rampage might fight Machida next. With the experience he brings from Japan's Pride Fighting Championship, Rampage would be a great match for either Rashad Evans or Lyoto Machida for his next fight.
